India’s billionaire race saw a notable turnaround in the economic landscape as the country’s wealthiest individuals rebounded from a decline in wealth during the first quarter of this year. However, their fortunes were still under pressure when compared to last year, when India’s richest individuals were topping the global chart.
The Indian Billionaires
With over 1,500 points jump in the Indian stock market index, Sensex, in May, the country’s richest individuals saw their wealth recovering. However, despite all the positives, India's wealthiest remained out of the ranking of the top 10 world's richest individuals.
As the Asia richest man Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries’ shares traded in the green in May, with the billionaire clinching one deal after the other, Ambani’s net worth on Bloomberg rich list also saw a billion-dollar jump in the same period.
Ambani's fellow billionaire Gautam Adani was seen recovering from the brunt of the Hindenburg Research report. Although Adani's wealth is significantly down compared to last year, he was back on the list of the top 20 billionaires in the world in May.
Cyrus Poonawalla, the MD of the Serum Institute of India, was on the list of elites who gained the most compared to India's top 10 richest people. With a staggering $2.72 billion increase in his wealth this year, Poonawalla has surpassed all his counterparts in terms of financial growth.
Meanwhile, the world’s richest person Elon Musk and second richest man Jeff Bezos, whom the Indian billionaires had left behind last year in wealth gains, are faring better this year so far.
The South Asian nation has emerged as a thriving hub for business and entrepreneurship, driven by its rapidly growing economy. Over the years, there has been a remarkable rise in the number of self-made billionaires and millionaires in the country, with numerous individuals amassing substantial wealth.
